S.A.L.T. (Spiritual Academy for Lifestyle Transformation)
One of the major problems facing our spiritual community is that as far as the world is concerned, we are irrelevant to everyday life. To say the same thing in Christ's words, we have, "...lost our flavor." We have lost our ability to make a difference in everyday life in our community.
S.A.L.T. is a spiritual formation process to help every Christian become "salty" as God intended-for a community of Believers to give to everyday life the flavor God intended. S.A.L.T. isn't something new. It is simply a different way to understand and apply the same spiritual formation principles Jesus used with His disciples, found in the New Testament and life of the early church, and the same spiritual formation principles used by John Wesley to bring spiritual renewal and vitality to the church through the Methodist Movement of the 18th Century.
What is this spiritual formation process? It is composed of three simple components: devotional living, relational strengthening, and vocational serving.
Devotional living is a category of spirituality made up of the spiritual disciplines practiced and passed down to Christians of the 21st Century: prayer, Bible study, fasting, tithing, worship. These disciplines are practiced on a daily basis and are included in a daily time set aside to be alone with God.
Relational strengthening involves managing personal relationships in a way in which people's lives are enriched and blessed. These essential life relationships include every place our lives come in contact with people: at home, work, play, at church.
Vocational serving focuses on discovering, developing and deploying the resources God has entrusted to every Christian so the Kingdom of God can be established here on earth. Every Believer is gifted, empowered, and equipped to be a part of the ministry of the Church and to help the Body of Christ reach the lost world with the saving truth of Jesus Christ.
The other crucial component of S.A.L.T. is the Covenant Community. This group of Believers agree together to pray, encourage and lovingly challenge one another in the areas mentioned above. Weekly the S.A.L.T. Community groups gather for prayer, fellowship, sharing, encouragement and support. This experience of authentic biblical community will last 60 to 90 minutes. The group also agrees to use the same devotional material in their quiet times so the content and experience of this time alone with God can become a common topic for discussion and sharing.
